You already know the routine. You find a pair of shorts you like, you put your phone in the pocket, and it sits there about half in — or it goes all the way in and then works its way out again on the third stile. So you walk with it in your hand, or you wear a bumbag you did not want to wear.
There is a zipped pocket on the left thigh of these. Phone goes in, zip goes across, and that is the end of it.
Three pockets, and one of them closes. Two slash pockets at the hands for keys and the things you take out constantly, and the zipped one on the thigh for the thing you cannot afford to drop. It sits flat, so there is no swinging weight against your leg while you walk.
The hem finishes at the knee. That is deliberate, and it is the other half of why these exist — the inside of the thigh is where shorts rub, and a hem that stops above it is a hem that rubs. Knee length covers the whole of it and stops before the heat of full-length trousers starts.
The waistband is elastic with a drawstring through it. No fly, no button, no zip. Sit down on a rock, kneel to do up a boot, lean back against a tree — nothing digs in, because there is nothing there to dig in.
The fabric is a woven nylon with a bit of elastane in it, so it gives when you step up onto something instead of pulling tight across it, and it dries quickly if you get caught out. There are shaped seams at the knee and the outer thigh, which is why the leg follows you through a stride rather than dragging.
Eight colours and sizes S to XXL. None of the colours shout, so they work for the walk and for wherever you go afterwards.
Real pockets. Covered where it rubs.
